Photo editor Raydene Salinas (HuffPo, NY Mag, Time Out) celebrated International Women's Day today with the launch of her new web project, Lady Guns. I am often asked about the difference between photo editing for print and digital, and this past week's New York Fashion Week coverage by Landon Nordeman provides an incisive example. I suggested this image to photo director Jody Quon to tease the fashion content in the Table of Contents. Part of its magnetism is its ethereal, delicate quality -- something that translates better in the large, slow-turning format of print. I felt the photo, while stunning, was too delicate for web, so it was not included with the rest of the Delpozo show coverage online. However, it is perfectly suited to the magazine.
Bryan Formhals interviewed photographer Amy Lombard for the most recent episode of the LPV Show. I've worked with Amy many time over the past few years. She speaks (and shoots!) beyond her years. Bryan asked Amy how she felt about having photo editors editing her work. She told him,
One person who I love when she edits my work is Emily Shornick. I love the photos that she chooses and the sequencing. I'm always like, "Oh! That makes a lot of sense. I get that!" She's one photo editor that I'm psyched on.

During last week's blizzard, I had a nice long conversation with PhotoWhoa's Freddy Martinez. We spoke about photography and editing. He asked some tough questions, including a request to define beauty in 140 characters or more. I told him,
Beauty is an aesthetic pleasure that transcends joy to illuminate a truth or ideal. That was only 57 characters, but I'm an editor. I find brevity beautiful.

By popular demand (and my own nostalgia for tangible snapshots), I have opened my first pop-up Instagram print shop. A carefully curated selection of my original Instagram photos are now available for a limited time. They are printed on archival-quality 300gsm paper with a smooth matte finish, and measure 4in x 4in including a 3mm white border. Each photo is signed and numbered.

Fashion Lust, Dina Litovsky's first US solo show, opens today at Anastasia Photo in NYC. The show comprises of photographs shot over four seasons at fashion week, many of which I produced for The Cut. Be sure to check it out before it closes on February 26! Minneapolis's Weinstein Gallery is currently exhibiting photographs artist Ina Jang shot for The Cut, alongside fashion photographs by Lillian Bassman, Olivia Bee, Cass Bird, Louise Dahl-Wolfe, Toni Frissell, Frances McLaughlin-Gill, Sheila Metzner, Sarah Moon, Genevieve Naylor, Deborah Turberville, and Ellen von Unwerth. National Geographic's photography blog Proof published an interview today with photographer Landon Nordeman on the fashion month coverage we worked on together for The Cut/New York Magazine.
Landon told Proof, "Emily just encourages me to be myself and make pictures. That is music to any photographer’s ears." It's a privilege to work with someone like Landon -- a photographer who is self-directed and shoots with a distinct, joyful vision.
